I use a TRV740, and generally use a radio pin mic. But the shoe for those can cost a bit. So you are generally better off just using the built in mic.

The on-camera mic is usually fine on most newer cameras.... the only thing you have to worry about it getting wind sound on the track as you record the dialogue. Most external booms filter this out so just be careful.

Another lowbudget method is getting a normal microphone and plugging it into the camera... you can always mess around with the sound in the edit.

If you can get a hold of a small external boom then go for that... or even a radio mic as mentioned previously... or just make a boom yourself out of a washing pole and a microphone... as long as the sound is clear who will know?

There be the problem. HandyCams tend to have a sort of grinding sound of the tape advancing on the audio track unless you use an external mic. But they generally won't know as long as you are consistant.

We're using this fantastic little number on our current feature. For the money, I don't think you can beat it.

An excellent way to get good quality sound fairly cheaply is to buy an external mic and record onto minidisc. MD players are very cheap second hand, and produce excellent quality sound. Synching this sound up in FCP is pretty simple as all you do is match the waveforms from the camera sound, and the minidisc sound. Avoids all problems associated with whirring sounds etc. from within the camera as well (even the high quality sony cameras have this).
